The objective of this study was to obtain a better understanding of the rejection and transport behavior of
N-nitrosamines through nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) membranes. Nitrosamine
steady-state rejections by NF membranes ranged from 9% to 76%, depending on NF membranes and
nitrosamine compounds. As molecular weight increased, nitrosamine rejection increased, with the
exception of N-nitrosodiphenylamine (NDPHA). There was no feed concentration effect on nitrosamine
rejections with different feed concentrations over three orders of magnitude. RO membranes will be tested
for the removal of nitrosamines and experimental data will be applied to mathematical models to
determine permeabilities of various nitrosamines through NF and RO membranes. Includes 14 references, table, figure.
