Experience has shown that by the time students enter their last year in high school, they have already set their sights on a particular career path. Other disciplines, such as the health sciences, natural sciences, and classical engineering fields have a record of attracting the best minds among high school seniors by reaching out to them early on through science fairs, open house invitations, and job fairs. Manufacturing has only begun in recent years to make a similar pitch to attract students to a manufacturing career path. This paper presents the results of a SME-funded project to conduct manufacturing career workshops for 9th grade junior high students.
