该标准规定了减少表面处理过程中可能发生的氢脆敏感性或灵敏度的程序。据悉，该标准规定的热处理程序有助于降低氢脆的灵敏度。热处理程序在表面处理后执行，但比所有二次火星被膜工艺都要提前使用。组装后，表面处理前实施的去应力热处理程序由KS D ISO 9587规定。这个标准不适用于紧固件。

이 표준은 표면 처리 공정에서 일어날 수 있는 수소 취성의 민감성이나 민감도를 감소시키기 위한 절차에 대하여 규정한다. 이 표준에 규정한 열처리 절차는 수소 취성의 민감도를 줄이는 데 효율적인 것으로 알려져 있다. 열 처리 절차는 표면 처리 후에 수행하지만, 모든 2차 화성 피막 공정보다 앞서서 사용한다. 조립 이후, 표면 처리 전 실시하는 응력 제거 열처리 절차는 KS D ISO 9587에 규정되어 있다. 이 표준은 파스너(fastener)에는 적용하지 않는다.
