The objective of this slide presentation was to identify the least cost application of granular activated carbon (GAC) and free chlorine for long-term disinfection byproduct (DBP) regulatory compliance and to
evaluate the performance of GAC through
pilot scale and bench-scale work evaluating
GAC filter adsorbers and
GAC post-filter adsorbers. Pilot testing of filter adsorbers was
conducted to simulate biological removal mechanisms as well as adsorption.
Operating conditions were evaluated including:
depth of GAC;
carbon type, Bituminus vs. Lignite;
empty bed contact time (EBCT); biodegradable organic carbon; and,
filter operation, turbidity and particle count. Includes table, figures.
