In this paper we have described those factors involved in development of an integrated computerized information system that will bridge the gaps between those "Islands of Information" which spring up in all water utilities. Ours was an interesting challenge heightened by the fact that we are a 100+ year old company with a mountain of existing information that has to be incorporated into any system that is developed. We also have to overcome the old adage, "it has worked for 100 years, why change it?" There have been benefits even prior to the implementation of this plan. We all have a better understanding of how the organization works. Sharing through the workshops has enabled us to better understand each other's job and contribution. In addition, enhanced communication throughout the process has augmented other staff development programs for improved teamwork.
