Advances in water filtration process technology and the availability of new polymer coagulants have made the use of direct filtration with its attendant cost savings a viable treatment design in many cases. Prepared by the Direct Filtration Subcommittee of the AWWA Filtration Committee and approved by the Technical and Professional Council, this report discusses the results of a worldwide survey of operating and pilot plants that are using the direct filtration process. Also covered are: raw water quality, algae, temperature, pH, chemicals, mixing energy, coal media, backwash, turbidity, residual aluminum, color, iron and manganese, organics, virus and bacteria removal, and monitoring and analysis of water.
