On August 6, 1996, the President signed the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) amendments into law as Public Law (PL) 104-182. The new amendments made sweeping changes to the existing SDWA, created several new programs, and included a total authorization of more than $12 billion in federal funds for various drinking water programs and activities from fiscal year (FY) 1997 through FY2003. An overview of the provisions of the amendments is presented.
