This slide presentation outlines several case studies on nitrification. Within these studies, the effect of water quality is broken down into temperature, pH, chloramine residual, and Cl2:NH3-N ratio. The effect of preventive measures involved: adjusting water quality;
distribution system operational practices;
decrease water age;
remove sediments from pipes and reservoirs;
flushing program (unidirectional, dead-ends);
implement corrosion control program;
frequency of fill cycles in reservoirs;
free chlorination;
add low doses of chlorite (ClO2 or ClO2-);
Nitrification Action Plan and monitoring.
The effect of corrective measures involved: operational responses;
breakpoint chlorination;
entire distribution system;
targeted areas;
decrease water age,
reservoir cycling/turnover/mixing, and
reservoir draining and disinfection;
flushing (unidirectional, spot, dead-ends).
