This slide presentation outlines information on a laboratory benchmark study done at Water One, Water District No. 1 of Johnson County, Kansas City, Kansas. Objectives for the WaterOne study included:
spatial configuration
compared to similar utilities, and
laboratory area (square footage);
laboratory equipment;
staffing;
emergency response; and,
Laboratory Information Management Systems
(LIMS). Spatial configuration included:
a comparison of square footage per million
gallon of water treated; and, selection of
eight utilities that were similar to WaterOne in
plant capacity and population served. Laboratories included in spatial
configuration were:
wet chemistry laboratory;
organic laboratory;
inorganic laboratory;
microbiological laboratory;
sample receiving area; and,
sample preparation area. Components of the Emergency Response Plan included:
a survey focusing on any equipment and
analyses created by the utility's Emergency
Response Plan;
nearly all the utilities surveyed are investigating
certain rapid toxicity testing systems
(i.e. Microtox® or Eclox®); and,
equipment has been purchased
and staff and space has been dedicated at utilities where these systems and methods are practiced Includes tables, figures.
