This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of Houston's surface water treatment
processes and treatment goals. Problems encountered with finished water
manganese levels after enhanced coagulation are presented, along with an
investigation into possible causes,
raw water characteristics, and
manganese through treatment process. Presentation conclusions indicate the following: investigation into Mn problems in finished water
revealed a combination of contributing factors;
treatment technique for enhanced coagulation; sediments at single depth plant intake and lake variability;
management of return flows; solution was pH control both at source and in
treatment plant;
source control is being accomplished by laminar circulation -
increases DO levels at sediments, prevents lake turn overs
and increases pH;
treatment plant control is by utilization of caustic to raise
pH prior to filtration and in return flows; and,
potassium permanganate oxidation added for use as needed. Includes figures.
