One of the last steps in the preliminary design of a treatment plant is to develop the plant layout. By this stage of the design process, the site has been selected, the treatment processes have been identified, and the approximate dimensions of the process units have normally been established. The engineer then must arrange the process units on the site. There are a number of alternative basic plant layouts. The particular plant layout selected can have a significant effect on construction cost, hydraulics, plant performance, operation and maintenance (O&M), and ease of expansion. This article describes a compact plant layout that simplifies O&M and minimizes construction cost. Includes 6 references, table, figures.
