This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of biological filtration (biofiltration), including basic aspects of biological processes and a physical concept of a biofilm system. The presentation covers modeling and a unifying concept, pharmaceuticals removal, and membrane pretreatment. The presentation summary includes: classical and newer objectives for biofiltration include no design criteria and the need for a practically based modelling approach; dimensionless contact time (X) useful unifying parameter; simplification and extension of X possible; biofilters can remove certain pharmaceuticals and endocrine disrupting compounds; biofiltration as a pretreatment can reduce membrane fouling, although further development and experimental verification necessary; and, the Biofiltration Factor (BF) -- a (new) possible practically-oriented design parameter.
