This paper discusses design factors for industrial wastewater reuse. The purpose of reuse is to reduce consumption and effluents. This can be done by using fresh water for the highest-quality requirements and reusing process water in production steps for which lower quality water is acceptable. This entails classification of water quality requirements and effluent characteristics for each unit operation in a production facility. The volume of flow throughout the various unit operations must also be considered. Treatment of wastewater for reuse is discussed. Case histories are presented. The need for detailed analyses and planning is emphasized.
